enfinium completes major upgrade at Ferrybridge 1 energy-from-waste plant. enfinium has completed an upgrade programme at its Ferrybridge 1 energy-from-waste plant in West Yorkshire, its largest works at any of its facilities in a decade. The April and May programme replaced the plant's super heaters for the first time since it opened in 2015.
Ferrybridge 1 processes up to 725,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste a year and generates up to 85MW of electricity. The works also covered refractory tile renewal and repairs to the site's 1.2MW induced draft fan, with the super heater replacement carried out by Wakefield-based manufacturer Greens. enfinium plans to deploy carbon capture and storage at the Ferrybridge sites as part of its decarbonisation strategy.
Dr Jane Atkinson, Chief Operating Officer, said the project was "the largest programme of works we have undertaken at an enfinium facility in the last decade."
The UK processed 4.013 million tonnes of waste wood in 2025, 89 per cent of the total generated, according to annual statistics from the Wood Recyclers' Association. The figure is down 7.3 per cent on 2024 after unplanned outages at end-use plants created oversupply and squeezed storage.
