Griffiths Waste Management secures £2m loan for new Swansea MRF. Griffiths Waste Management has secured a £2 million loan from the Development Bank of Wales' Green Business Loan Scheme to build a new materials recycling facility in Swansea. The MRF will raise processing capacity from 25,000-30,000 tonnes a year to up to 200,000 tonnes.
The new MRF will use automated sorting systems to increase recovery rates and reduce contamination, with construction nearing completion and the plant expected to be fully operational later this year. The Development Bank of Wales loan forming part of a wider multi-million-pound investment that also includes group funds and a Welsh Government grant.
Griffiths Waste Management, established in 2010 and part of the Gavin Griffiths Group, currently processes between 25,000 and 30,000 tonnes of waste a year from its existing Swansea site, which has reached capacity.
Stenergy Worcester has been granted planning permission for a biomethane facility at Hindlip that will convert unavoidable food waste into green gas for the national grid. The county council committee approved the scheme, which will process around 48,500 tonnes of food waste a year.

Sheffield-based materials recovery firm Direct Special Metals has rebranded as MATIQ and confirmed plans to invest approximately £50 million in a new facility at Derwenthaugh Ecoparc in Gateshead, which the company says will become the UK's most advanced materials recovery facility.
